家計簿 What is Kakeibo?
Kakeibo (家計簿, “household account book”) was created by Motoko Hani in 1904 for Fujin no Tomo magazine. It’s a monthly reflection method built on four questions:
- How much do I have? (income)
- How much am I spending? (fixed + variable)
- What must go to debt? (your minimum payments)
- How can I improve? (surplus → highest-rate debt)
Answer them once a month on our dashboard—no daily tracking. Read the full Kakeibo guide or try the Kakeibo calculator page. On the dashboard, open the 家計簿 Kakeibo tab to use the four-question widget with your debts.
Your highest APR is bleeding interest
Attack 35%+ debts first. Every month you don't, you pay more in interest than principal.
Low-rate debt can wait
Pay the minimum. Redirect every extra dollar to high-APR debts—that's Mottainai in action.
Monthly payment freed when you're done
That's your current total monthly payment. Write down exactly what you'll do with it.
Add your debts
No debts added yet. Add your first debt above to get started.

Kaizen
Add $5–$10 more to your highest-rate debt each month. Small gains compound.
Mottainai
Before each purchase ask: is this wasteful? Every dollar saved attacks debt.
Ma
Check balances monthly, not daily. Anxiety is the enemy of long payoff journeys.
Ikigai
Write one sentence: what you'll do with your freed-up payment when debt-free.
